I would try to devote roughly one third of the critique to each element. In the intro, briefly introduce the title and author (assume that your reader has not read the original article), state in your own words what you see as being the main idea of the article. Your thesis should reflect your overall evaluation of her argument and (briefly) your reason(s) for this evaluation. The conclusion could briefly restate what you see as the author’s purpose in writing the article and whether or not he achieves this purpose. Direct quotes from the article are encouraged. They should be used to support your evaluation of the author’s argument. The body of Critique should contain the following components: Summary of the Article The summary section will be brief so that you will have to be selective in determining what ideas to include and which to leave out. As in all summaries there should not be any opinions or value judgments in this part of the essay. Assessment the Presentation Now, it is your turn. You need to present your views in explaining whether or not the author is successful in achieving her purpose as a writer. In other words, does she present an effective argument? Are her support and warrants valid? Does she commit any logical fallacies? If so, what specific fallacies does she commit and what are the arguments that she commits them? Are there any important considerations that she fails to address?

Response to the Content The last section of the body could discuss whether or not you agree with Zimmerman’s ideas and explain why. With which of her ideas do you agree and with which do you disagree? Realize that ANY value judgments that you make should be supported by passages from the text.
