#2: Write an Image Analysis Essay Due date: Tuesday July 21 (Submit as a file upload in the Canvas Essay Submission Assignment) Write a 4-1/2 to 5-page formal academic essay in which you choose two documentary/news photographs, two paintings, or two advertisements to analyze in a closed-form essay. Your two visual texts should have enough in common to facilitate meaningful comparisons. Show these images in your essay (if you are analyzing videos, you’ll need to show screen captures), but also describe your two visual texts in detail to highlight what you want viewers to see and to provide a foundation for your analysis. For this closed-form analysis, choose several key points of contrast as the focus. Your thesis statement should make a claim about key differences in the way that your chosen visual texts establish their purposes and achieve their persuasive effects. Note: if the images are large and take up more than ¼ a page, only count ¼ of the total essay page count for each image. If you cannot take a screen capture of the images, make sure you do an adequate describing the images and add to your Works Cited. This essay is based on Chapter 8 in The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing. Everything you need to know about how to write this type of essay in in this chapter. The topic of this essay is a current issue facing African Americans today. You can use what you’ve learned in the following chapters in A Different Mirror to support your ideas but need at least two other outside sources.

• Use standard letter-size 8 1/2 X 11 white paper

• Set your font to Times New Roman, 12′ font and line spacing to double spacing

• All essays will set your margins to 1″ margins on all paper borders

• Use MLA format for first page

• Give your paper a title that reflects your thesis; center your title on page 1

• Italicize the titles of longer works you mention (books, full-length plays, periodicals)

• Use quotation marks around titles of shorter works (articles for example)
