Essay #2 Prompt Essay #2: The Argument Length: Two and a half – Three pages * Please include a “works cited” page and use MLA-style citations.* Directions: Write a two-to-three page argument essay. You must argue for or against your topic and demonstrate a clear stance, using evidence to prove your points. Your essay must be between 2-3 pages and CAN NOT use 1st person in any capacity — you cannot say “I think” or “in my opinion”, for example.. Essays that use the first person will receive a failing grade. If you are unsure about how NOT to use the first person, it is very simple. Check out the difference: I think the death penally is wrong because it is costly, inhumane and barbaric. VS. The death penally is wrong because it is costly, inhumane and barbaric. The following elements of Essay #2 will be graded: 1) Introduction: Stating your stance in the first sentence is not cool! Use your first couple of sentences to capture your reader’s attention and “show not tell”. Use a hook, bridge and thesis in your introductory paragraph. 2) Thesis statement: Your thesis statement should be a brief description of your topic and why you are arguing for or against it. This does not need to be repeated throughout your paper, it needs to be explained in the body. 3) Research: How much do you know about your topic? Is your explanation relevant and informative enough? Can anyone understand your points without prior context? Will your successfully convince your reader to come to “your side”? Research can and should be relevant. Use newspaper articles, databases (the librarians are available and can help if you swing by!) books and CREDIBLE websites. Cite your research in a works cited page. 4) Logic: Any good argument utilizes logic to persuade the reader. Are we convinced? Are you? 5) Grammar/Punctuation/Clearly defined and separated ideas: Please read your paper out loud several times before you turn it in. How is the flow? Does it need to be refined? Are you sounding too academic?
