The importance of the literature review is that it should highlight important issues that research has left unresolved. A review of this type is intended to critically examine existing knowledge and direct your research. In other words, you will be summarizing and drawing conclusions about your research findings. At the same time, you will examine the bias or rhetorical agenda of each source. For example, do scholars agree or disagree on a particular point? Did other sources yield different results? As you evaluate or write a literature review, ask yourself: 1. What is the research topic? What is the purpose of this study? 2. Is/Are the research question (s) / hypothesis clearly presented? 3. How is the literature review organized: chronologically or thematically? 4. Are the key terms defined and explained properly? 5. Does this literature review have an introduction, body, and conclusion? 6. Is there a gap that’s clearly presented towards the end of the literature review? 7. Are references and sources reliable?
