Transformational leadership is a charismatic type of leadership (Bass & Bass, 2008). Transformational leaders focus on the priorities of the followers, adjusting the end goal to the goals set by the followers (Bass & Bass, 2008). The American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC) believes in the transformational leader model so much that they designed the hospital magnet certification around the transformative model (ANCC, 2020). Some transformative leaders include Martin Luther King, Jr. He recognized that his followers wanted equality and he showed them show to get equality (Bass & Bass, 2008), using nonviolent means.
Healthcare is in a constant state of flux. New information regarding EBP, insurance changes, federal guideline changes is passed down to the FNP almost daily. Using transformative leadership, the FNP can help the staff solidify their goals and encourage them to be enthusiastic about the change.

Several years ago, I was involved in a computer software change for a large hospital in Las Vegas, NV. Many of the staff disliked the new system before they’d ever used it. Instead of trying to convince them it would make their life easier, I took the negative leaders, those that were most verbally negative about the system, and had trained them as superusers. Once they learned the system they taught it to the other staff. Once the superusers saw how easy the system was, they were eager to begin using it and teaching the others. I could have just said, “Too bad if you don’t want the system you’re getting it anyway” but that would not get the others on board. Much better to give them the ability to convince themselves that the change was positive.
