adolescent literature and censorship Assignments | Online Homework Help
Mid-Term Essay– This is NOT a research essay. It is a persuasive argument.
The Mid-Term Paper will be an essay analyzing and discussing the issue of adolescent literature and censorship. This can address a particular book read in class, any book(s) on the American Library Association Banned/Challenged Book List relating to adolescents or a conceptual analysis regarding censorship and adolescent literature issues. You are not required to read an additional book. The paper should address issues about the banning/censoring of adolescent literature in school classrooms, school libraries OR public libraries. Be specific WHERE you are discussing as schools and public libraries may react to censorship differently. If you discuss a particular case, keep the summary brief. This essay should be a MINIMUM of 1000 words including 4-6 separate academic cited references. Word count does not include heading or citation page.
For clarity on this paper, think persuasive argument. Written in 3rd person (no 1st or 2nd person voice), do you agree or disagree? Is banning/challenging a good thing, helpful/or harmful to teens ages 12-18? Should books be banned to 12-15 year olds and not for 16-18 year olds? These are only suggestions but make sure you have a point to your discussion and analysis–Pick a side and take a stand. Again, be specific WHERE you are discussing (public library, school library, or public classroom). Hint–“the government” does not banned books. Also, a book may be banned in one county but not another. For example, John Green’s A Fault In Our Stars is banned in the Pasco County school district but not Pinellas, Manatee, or Hillsborough County school districts.
For the Midterm Essay:
You are required to have 4-6 cited sources in your reference/Works Cited page. All citations must be scholarly references. Novels may be included in the references but do not count as academic sources. Seek scholarly experts as your references –you may also use the course sources (textbook, Developing Adolescents, my Word doc pages). No .com or .net references (including .uk), newspapers or magazines are allowed. Most .org sources are NOT scholarly. I will accept ala.org, yalsa.org, and pbs.org. Word count does NOT include heading information and citation page. One quote is preferred but no more than two quotes or paraphrases from one source. This still counts as only one academic cited reference. All papers will be checked through a plagiarism source. It is expected approximately 80-90% of the essay is your work, not copied and pasted from another source. The midterm and final essays should be submitted double spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font. At the top left, put Your Name, Course Number, Professor’s Name and Date. Your paper needs a title and page numbers. You are not required to have a separate cover page. Document should be submitted in a .doc, .docx, or .rtf. Academic essays should be written in 3rd person.TurnInIn is enabled for this assignment and should be around 15%.
