Compose a formal essay in response to the following prompt: Using Quiet Odyssey and Voices of Freedom as your main sources, trace the evolution of the American Dream between 1865 and 1990. Who had access to it and who did not? Identify external factors (e.g., legislation, racism, sexism, political environment) that shaped Americans’ struggles for opportunity throughout this period.
To answer the prompt, reference and analyze at least six documents from Voices of
Freedom, along with the memoir Quiet Odyssey. Incorporate and cite lecture content or Give
Me Liberty to provide historical context for the primary readings. (The documentary The Latino Americans may be used in lieu of a document.) Rely solely on course materials for this paper; do not use online sources.
