Annotated Bibliography

PART 1. RESEARCH & PREPARATION:
Artist Research / Annotated Bibliography
Bibliography:
Information provided after Purdue Online Writing Lab, https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/common_writing_assignments/annotated_bibliographies/ index.html
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Your goal is to choose at least five (5) best sources in English and list them in an alphabetical order, ordering them by the author’s last name. Ideally, the sources will be scholarly and published in print.
Bibliographies are sometimes called “References” or “Works Cited” depending on the style format you are using.
What does “best” mean?
• Up to date: the source reflects the state of the most recent scholarship on the artist,
• Comprehensive and deeply informed by research,
• Provides insightful and critical close reading of the artist’s work,
• Avoids or dismantles clichés, and reveals unexpected aspects of the artist’s work,
• Illuminates the significance of the artist’s work both at the time of its creation and in the
present.
Some of you might have language skills that many of us don’t have. Use them!
You might be able to get hold of excellent sources, which are inaccessible to others. In diversity is our scholarly strength as a group.
If you do find such sources, include them in your bibliography in addition to the texts available in English.
Annotation:
An annotation is a summary and evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and evaluation of each of the sources. Specifically, each of your annotations will include three brief paragraphs: a summary of the text, its evaluation (strengths and weaknesses), and a reflection on its usefulness and applicability to your research, in light of the existing information on “your” artist on Wikipedia.
How to format your Annotated Bibliography:
Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style, Notes and Bibliography Style, to format your bibliography: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html
Standard manuscript, that is—1-inch margin, 12-pt typeface (Times New Roman or similar), black ink. Your names, class number, and date of the assignment placed in the header of the page.
