Section 1: Response to Reading – read article before and be prepared to apply the information to your (virtual) SFMOMA experience. Peruse any of the following virtual museums: SFMOMA, MOMA, TATE, GUGGENHEIM to find modern works with which to answer the following:

Section 2: Interacting with Modern Art
(Find another artwork) Recall Russell’s article on the late 1880s, and specifically the undeniable influence the culture had on artistic output of the day. As an object in the museum, what kind of role would you say this artwork plays in our culture, or how does it function in our society? What does the work reflect about our time? How does this piece address at least one of the following issues discussed in class such as the ideal, the afterlife, political propaganda, religious tradition, aesthetic and academic traditions, or cultural style and personal artistic style? Consider how this piece reflects the zeitgeist (the spirit of the time) of contemporary American life.

Section 3: Creative Activities at the Museum
Choose one work of art from the MOMA, Tate, SFMOMA, Guggenheim online. Do a creative response to the work. Write a poem, creative prose, write a story. Then discuss how the style of the work (visual elements as well as whether piece is conceptual or perceptual) influenced the response you gave.
