Bridge Hydraulics

The City of Bath has a long history of historical flooding and after the important flood of 1960, the Bath Flood Protection Scheme (1964-1974) was initiated and consisted of different improvements to the river hydraulics including the replacement of Old Bridge with Churchill Bridge. Churchill Bridge in Bath’s city center represents one of the main routes into Bath but was not always a single-span bridge. In 1754 a five-arch stone bridge, Old Bridge, was constructed and was only replaced in 1966 by the current Churchill Bridge as part of the Bath Flood Protection Scheme. This project NORMALLY involves a laboratory analysis (in the Civil Engineering fluids lab) of the two different bridges and undertakes a critical evaluation of the impact of the different bridge shapes on the flow interaction. This enables an assessment of the degree of influence of the bridges for different flow rates and water depths. HOWEVER, because of the Corona Virus, I am unable to conduct the experiment. So my professor told me to try to do the water level calculations using a combination of your cross-sections, Manning’s equation and the existing historical flood peaks (m3/s) and see if I can replicate the historical water levels observed at Half Penny bridge. I have already finished the literature review. Hence I need your help for the rest of the dissertation such as introduction, body chapters, and conclusion.
