For your third and final essay assignment you will rely on theories from Chapters One and Two as you focus on the pros and cons of the satire presented in Chapters Four and Five in The Rhetoric of Humor.
Four to five pages is a relatively short research project so you will not want to choose a broad topic. Possibly you are familiar with one of the television comedians mentioned in Chapter Four or Five. Steven Colbert and John Stewart are on network nighttime television. John Oliver used to appear on John Stewart’s network early show and now has his own cable show. If you are unsure of someone’s material, you can always turn to YouTube for some brief performances.
What you will be looking for are two of the methods used by the comedians and the effects that their satire is having on the focus of their work. In your opinion is the satire having a negative or positive effect on politics religion, ethnicities or lifestyles? Do they go too far, or are their points made within ethical boundaries?
Include the comedic styles the individuals used along with information about the elements you learned in the first two chapters. Some of the more prominent theories are listed:
Benign Violation Superior Us vs. Inferior Them
Cognitive Shift Violation Humor
Incongruity Theory Ambivalence Theory
Cognitive Theory
When choosing a theory for your essay, you will surely need to have a good understanding of the author’s explanation of its meaning and you will then agree or disagree with it for your own thesis. You can use more than one author to support your argument, but do not choose more than one theory.
Your essay will be graded on your ability to remain focused on your thesis, and the words of the writers. Choose good examples from the text while offering your own insightful commentary of the writer’s work.
