Canadian Film Analysis

Using theories rooted in cultural studies (e.g. Marxism, feminism), write an analytical paper about a Canadian fiction-narrative film.
Your paper can be about a short or feature-length fictional narrative film as long as it is live action (not animation). The film can be working in any genre (e.g. comedy, horror, youth, bio-pic, adventure, etc.). NO DOCUMENTARIES!

Write a cultural analysis of a Canadian film using a clearly stated theoretical frame such as semiotics, Marxism, feminism. The key focus of your analysis is to examine how the film reflects Canadian society, history and/or culture through the filmmakers’ use of imagery (mise-en-scene), iconography, sound, music, editing, casting (e.g. stars), etc. The key question is: how is Canada cinematically represented or imagined as a nation in the film?

Your Paper Must Include the following:
1. Film’s production details:
o Brief plot synopsis (1-2 sentences).
o Principle cast
o Key Creatives – director, writer, producer, etc.
o Running time
o Genre
o Production Company
o Release date
2. Image from film. This can be an image from the internet or a screen capture.
3. Cultural Analysis (750 words)
4. References (APA Style). Your paper is required to use 3 scholarly references.

Your Analysis Must Include the following:
• Introduction:
• Begin with an interesting opening statement about the film that grabs the reader’s attention.
• Provide a thesis statement. What is your main argument, and how will you prove it?
• Main Argument:
• Key points that provide evidence for your thesis.
• Cite specific examples from the film.
• Supporting theoretical evidence (e.g. Marx, Saussaure). 3 scholarly references.
• Conclusion:
• Short summary of how you proved your argument.
• What was unique about your analysis?
