CCJ 4614 Unit III Class Discussion Question Post
One of the common patterns with school shooters is that they “telegraph” their actions in advance by making a generic threat of violence or discussing their plan for killing. This has led school officials and other students at all levels of education—especially ranging from middle schools up through college—to be much more attentive to violent comments. If a student shows an unusual fascination with violence and makes violent comments, there’s a chance that some action will be taken.
The question for this week is this: At what point might it be the case that we have taken this concern with violent comments or threats too far? Or, is it better to err on the side of being safe? In connection to this, what if someone you know was working on a creative writing assignment for an English class here at FSU, and they wrote a story depicting a mass shooting incident at a university? What would you do?
One big point: This question definitely is asking your opinion about a hypothetical situation, but you must find ways to systematically incorporate key material from the readings. In short, make sure that your post is not just informative about your opinions, but also is informative about the issue of school shootings.
