Chapter 17 (The Economy and Work)
Moving towards a shorter work week:
For a long time, people in the U.S. labor force were putting in ever-increasing work hours. The trend toward a longer work week continued through the 1980s and much of the 1990s. By then, the United States stood out among high-income countries as having the longest working week. During the last decade, however, this trend has eased. The reasons for the long-term increase in the work week are many and varied. For one thing, the share of women in the labor force continues to increase, and more women are taking jobs that demand long hours, such as management and professional work. Economic insecurity is also driving more families to work longer and harder.
How important to you is controlling the number of hours you work each week? What would be your ideal work week?
