Documentary Reflection: Everybody loves Babies Assignment 1: 20 marks
Due Date: Session 6 Week 23-26 September 2019. Hand in at the start of class.
The documentary shows babies during their first year of life and illustrates cultural variations and similarities in the physical
and social settings. In addition, the documentary provides examples of culturally regulated customs and practices of
parental childcare and childrearing. Informed by the documentary, and using your own words, answer the questions that
follow. Note that Question 2 involves a choice of either a or b. Remember to include your word count for each question.
1. Write a brief summary introducing each of the babies and their family life/lifestyle. (5)
2. Choose either a OR b to answer: (10)
Each child had a different environment to interact with. Provide examples of how each baby interacted with their
environment and how this influenced their development in the domain indicated in the question. In addition, refer
to sociocultural theory in your answer.
a. Language development – Referring to sociocultural theory, explain what language development means. Use an
academic reference to support your explanation. The four babies had many experiences in their environments that
contributed to their language development. Provide one example for each baby that is related to their language
development that highlights the influence of their particular culture.
b. Social emotional development – Referring to sociocultural theory, explain what social emotional development means.

3. This documentary showed particular cultures and customs for raising children.
Provide an example of a cultural custom or practice for one of the four settings that was new learning for you. Make
sure that you do not repeat information provided in Question 2. In your answer, explain why this was new or
different to your own culture. (5)
