Civil Rights Leaders
Read the Article (set out below following these instructions) discussing six (6) civil rights leaders.
Write a focused review of the Article (see below) that is structured per the following guidelines which you should read in full before starting this assignment.
Select two of the six leaders and compare and contrast their views on the advancement of civil rights for African Americas.
In particular: How do the actions, positions, and opinions of those two relate to personal and social responsibility? For example, comment on the actions, ideas, and/or thoughts of those two individuals relating to how those two persons urged their supporters to undertake personal and/or social responsibility.
State whether you agree or disagree with the views of those two. Is there one view of the two that you think is/was the most correct? What moral or ethical issues, problems, or dilemmas are presented by the views of those two persons. Since we have had time to see what has happened since these individuals expressed their ideas (all have been dead for at least 50 years), which of the two that you have picked do you think is most important to you and to your decisions regarding your own personal and social responsibility, not just as to your personal life but to as to the wider community.
Don’t just restate the factual events described in the article – your review should be an analysis of the personal and social responsibility issues and your thoughts about them as related to the two leaders. There is no right or wrong answer. You will mostly be graded on whether you reflect in your review an understanding of the basic views of the individuals you selected regarding African-American civil rights and that you have provided in your review some meaningful analysis of the personal and social responsibility issues as it relates to the two individuals that you picked.
There are various definitions of personal and social responsibility, but the following may be helpful to you:
Personal responsibility is the idea that human beings choose, instigate, or otherwise cause their own actions. That is, each person is responsible for his own actions – and, thus, whether they choose actions that help or hinder their society or community. Each individual should act in such a way that minimizes the adverse effect on those immediately around them and accept responsibility for their own actions.
Social responsibility is the duty every individual must perform so as to improve his or her society or community. Social responsibility is an ethical theory, in which individuals are accountable for fulfilling their civic duty; the actions of an individual must benefit the whole of society (not just themselves or their family).
As you are thinking about your article review and your discussion of the two civil rights leaders you have selected, keep these ideas in mind:
Identify/Explain a crucial decision made by a national leader or representative body and describe options for resolving that dilemma
Describe/Discuss consequences that evolved from the choice.
Describe/Discuss the impact of this decision across the historical, social, political, economic, cultural, and global forces on United States history.
Assess/Evaluate whether the decision made and actions taken resolved the initial dilemma, or if additional predictable or unforeseen consequences resulting from this decision could have been avoided or improved upon.
Reviews must adhere to the following guidelines:
The review should be about 800-850 words in length – usually about 2 ½ to 3 pages in a Word document if you follow the required margin and font requirements below. Do not turn in more than 3 pages or more than 850 words.
No footnotes are required, no bibliography is required, and no citations to the article are required. But use parenthetical page references (at the end of the sentence within the ending period) to reference a quotation from the article. For example, if you are quoting from page 13 of the article, you might write:
King said, “We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline” (13).
This is not a research paper. You are not required to research or read anything other than the article in preparation of your paper. Think of it as a personal reflection.
Use complete sentences with proper grammar and punctuation. Edit your writing carefully. Do not turn in your first draft if you want a good grade.
Avoid the use of first person. Do not write: “I believe King’s argument is persuasive because . . ..” Rather simply write: “King’s argument is persuasive because . . ..” Do not write: “I feel that personal responsibility is relevant because . . ..” Simply write: “Personal responsibility is relevant because . . ..” It goes without saying that the review is an expression of your beliefs and feelings.
Double space in your draft Word document if you type your review there first on your own computer and then copy and paste the draft into the submission text box associated with this Assignment – which is the recommended way to create this assignment. That way you will have your own copy on your computer if something happens in the submission process. Note: when you copy into the text box for the Assignment, there will be no double spacing which is fine. The double spacing suggestion is just intended to help you judge the length of your review
1” margins everywhere – top, bottom, and sides.
Use only 12-point font only in your submission
No title or title page or heading is necessary. Put your name on the first line of the review then start your review on the next line.
