” You will write a 5-6 page term paper that compares two poems with a similar theme. See pages 607-611 in An Introduction to Poetry for a list of poems grouped by theme. First choose one of the themes, and then choose two poems listed under that theme for your analysis.

Your paper must be word-processed and written in MLA format. It must also be a full five pages to meet the minimum requirement.

Introduction: Your paper should begin with an introduction that introduces your topic, the poems that you have chosen, and a thesis statement.

Body Paragraphs: You will present your analysis in well-organized body paragraphs that treat each poem equally. You can either analyze each poem separately or compare and contrast different aspects of each poem in the same paragraph.

Conclusion: The last paragraph in your poem should summarize your analysis of the two poems and introduce an additional insight that you discovered during the process of writing this paper.

The Works Cited page is the last page of your paper. At a minimum, it will include the two poems that you have chosen, plus any sources you use to help you write this paper. The Works Cited page is not included in the 5-6 page requirement. To explain, if your paper is five pages long, your Works Cited page will be the sixth page, and so forth.

Avoid these pitfalls:

1. Do not write a lengthy introduction. Briefly set up your topic and get to the poems!

2. Do not provide definitions or detailed background information. I consider this “padding.” Restrict biographical or background info to 2-3 sentences.

3. Do not write your paper after only reading the poems a few times. Instead, read the poems many times before writing

4. Clearly identify a poems theme or purpose before you begin your analysis. This will make it easier for you to organize your ideas and to pick out relevant details.

5. Do not quote more than 2 lines of poetry at a time. Instead, point out significant words, phrases, and images. Place line numbers in parentheses, and employ the conventions of MLA documentation for scholarly “borrowings” in the form of paraphrase or direct quotation.

When writing your term paper consider all of the topics that we have studied this semester.

Once you have identified the theme of each poem, focus on two or three manageable elements in both poems that you can use to compare and contrast them. This will help you to organize your analysis. Consider elements such as tone, figures of speech, imagery, poetic form, symbolism, and so forth. Our textbook contains several chapters about writing literature papers that may also help you.”

“Integrating Poetry Quotations into Your Work

There are four necessary components to any successfully integrated quotation:

1. A signal phrase, wherein you introduce the quote

2. The quotation itself, which should be written verbatim from the source material with individual lines separated by forward slashes/

3. The proper attribution for the quotation – what line numbers are you quoting?

4. An explanation/further examination of the quotation; in other words, explain how the quotation you have chosen supports your argument

Examples of Shorter Quotations from Poetry:

In “Ozymandias” Shelley writes, “these words appear: / ‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings’” (9-10). This quote explains the hubris that Ozymandias had; he thought so highly of himself that he believed he was the king of kings.

According to the text, “This is my son, mine own Telemachus / To whom I leave the scepter and the isle” (Tennyson 33-34). From this quotation, the reader knows that Ulysses is planning to leave his island and declare his son king. ”
