After reading John Caldwell’s “Cultures of Production,” Listening to the 2 Val Lewton Podcasts, and Watching Cat People, write an essay on the constraints placed on the creative process of Val Lewton and his staff and describing the culture of production in the Lewton Horror Unit. First, for roughly 1/3 of the essay (150-200 words) describe what you saw as the most significant constraints and how Lewton et al. got around them/dealt with them. Second, for roughly 1/3 of the essay (150-200 words) discuss the finished film and whether you think it lived up to Lewton’s ambition and/or the hype of the podcast. With the final 1/3 of your essay (150-200 words), briefly describe the culture of production within Lewton’s Unit based on John Caldwell’s “Cultures of Production” article. What was it like to work in that unit? How did Lewton and Staff see themselves? What tensions or emotional tones were at work in the unit? In other words, what was the work culture like?
