Course Spanning Task
Before starting the paper, please read through ALL the Course Spanning Assignments THROUGHLY
Unit 1 Course Spanning Task (CST) – Answer the following questions:
The “course spanning task” is a requirement that the University has for students to have an assignment that connects everything into a final paper. As such, it will have a small component for each unit — all leading to your final paper in Unit 8.
The course spanning task for this class will be a final paper in which you identify some “instance” (or case) in which leadership exemplified or failed to exemplify ethical principles. You will use everything you learn to perform this analysis.
The course spanning assignment for Unit 1 is: From your experience, identify in 500 words or less some story in which leadership ran into ethical problems (or set an ethical standard for good actions).
Unit 2 Course Spanning task – Describe Your Case:
In this second phase of the course spanning task (CST), I am asking you to use the case you selected in the CST for the first unit and write a short encapsulation of it. E.g., the Enron oil company defrauded its stockholders…..and tell what they did. I don’t need a lot here — just 1.5 -2 pages overall (not counting title page, etc.).
Unit 3 Course Spanning task: Finding References for Your CST – Answer the following questions:
In this third CST assignment, you will be asked to find at least five (5) professional or peer-reviewed sources that you intend to use in analyzing the case you described in Unit 2. Now is the time for you to change your case — you can change it to some other case if you don’t think that you will be able to analyze your earlier choice effectively.
If you don’t have access to the Internet, then work with the articles and case studies provided under the Course CD Resources tab. There’s an Additional Resources subfolder with 26 articles linked.
There is not a required page length on this assignment.
Unit 4 Course SpanningTask: Evaluating Your References
In this fourth installment of your CST, you are asked to read through the references you identified in Unit 3 and write a short 3-4 sentence description of each one. That’s it — still easy! The final project will take more work, so plan your time to allow for that.
Unit 5 Course Spanning Task: Developing a Thesis Statement for Your CST – Answer the following questions:
In the Unit 5 CST assignment, you will need to figure out what you are going to say (generally) in your final paper. I am asking you to turn in a short paragraph that introduces and contains your “thesis statement” — i.e., a statement that tells the reader (in this case me) how you are going to approach your examination of the case study. They usually go something like this: “In this study, the case of *****’s failure to implement and follow the simple ethical guidelines of honesty, transparency, and fairness caused a catastrophic failure of the organization and resulted in legal battles that continue until this day. My research that grounds this discussion can be found in the writings of ****** and I plan on showing how this debacle could have been avoided if only the CEO of ***** had demonstrated, promoted, and enforced ethical behaviors within her organization.” Something like this is what I want to see.
Not more than 200 words.
Unit 6 Course Spanning Task: General Outline of CST Final Paper – Answer the following questions:
Now that you have identified a case from the modern world, discovered ethical issues that can be the subject of your final paper, performed research to locate suitable references to support the paper, evaluated these resources, and defined your path with a thesis statement, I am asking for a general outline of your paper. They look something like this:
Title of Paper
Introduction and thesis statement
Section 1: The case study (here is a short description of the case you are going to talk about) Not too much here — I am more interested in how well you can demonstrate your competency with ethical analysis that knowing every little particular about the case. This is not a “history” lesson, but an analysis.
Section 2: Ethical problem #1 — how things went wrong.
Section 3: Ethical problem #2 (if there is one) — you can keep going with more of these but not necessary.
Section 4: What could have been done to prevent the problem.
Section 5: Conclusion: How ethical reasoning and making decisions guided by ethical principles can enhance the life and productivity of an organization.
This is just a general idea — yours might be quite different but the format of an outline is the same. Enjoy — no page requirement.
