In Part II of the assignment, you will write a paper to synthesize your ideas. Part II – Writing Write at three to four (3) page paper in which you:

State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same. The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing: Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph. Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences. Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.    Corporal Punishment My topic choice is corporal punishment. A major contention is as to whether Corporal Punishment should be used in K-12 Schools. The issue of corporal punishment has for a long period of time received mixed reactions from stakeholders. Corporal punishment is regarded as a form of physical punishment whereby the victim is hit either by using a hand or by an object like a paddle. The severity of corporal punishment varies depending on the context and the person perpetrating it. In my view, I feel that corporal punishment should be used in K-12 Schools since its benefits outweigh its demerits. Some of the premises that oppose my position on corporal punishment are it is not appropriate since it resulted to both physical and mental harm, it is violent and an unsafe and it harms the education of children. (Here are my supporting points)   

    Corporal punishment is not appropriate since it results to both physical and mental harm which can last for a long time the effecting the wellbeing of students. According to research students who are punished through corporal punishment tend to suffer from problems of attention and aggression. Corporal punishment is a form of punishment, which is feared by most students since it is associated with pain. As a result, students who are constantly subjected to it tend to suffer from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, stress, and a variety of mental health issues. In extreme cases, such students tend to resist that punishment and this can easily result to a crisis in an institution. Also, some teachers tend to use it in an extreme manner, with the making it to lose value in the long run.  

     Another opposition to my claim is that corporal punishment results in a school environment that is violent and an unsafe. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, corporal punishment may result to a student behavior that is violent and disruptive. Every time that corporal punishment is being subjected to students is a foundation for them to learn how to inflict harm on others. They may teach bad behavior that in order to get their way through, they have to use violence. In the long run even teachers will not be safe in the classroom since corporal punishment tends to make the victimized students be hardcore, and a hard nut to crack. It is not the best way for a student might end up thinking that corporal punishment is one of the ways of settling disputes in society. Corporal punishment harms the education of children. Students need an effective and conducive environment so that they are able to perform. If animals are protected from punishment, then it is unfair to subject humans to corporal punishment. The fear of being punished makes students to lose interest in education and this makes them to eventually perform poorly in exams.

         Even though corporal punishment is being opposed, I tend to refute that argument by saying that it still remains the best form of punishment to date. I oppose the fact that corporal punishment results in mental and physical harm. If it is used in a moderate manner, it can make students have good morals and even respect their seniors in society.    

 

  I disagree with the fact that corporal punishment results in student behaviour that is violent and disruptive. This is because if it is used in moderation, it makes students fear being on the wrong, hence will rather choose to remain morally upright rather than face the cane. The method is highly effective if it is used in combination with other forms of punishment. Finally, corporal punishment does not harm the education of learners, but it helps to keep them on track by assuring them that deviant behavior is a major cause of poor performance in academics.
