Critique Essay Assignment
To be submitted via Blackboard before the start of the class. Length: 750 – 800 words (This word count does not include the title or reference page). Description:
For this assignment, you must perform a critical analysis on the article you selected for your Critique Outline Assignment. Your aim is to create a convincing essay that suggests the article is either effective or ineffective by providing support (quotations with APA in-text citations) from the article for your argument. You are evaluating the strengths or weaknesses of the article. Please use your outline to help guide you with this essay.
Judge how effective/ineffective the article is by examining any 3 of the below options:
1) Tone (Is the article formal or informal – how does the tone strengthen or weaken the article?)
2) Audience & Purpose (Who is this written for? What is the writer’s purpose?)
3) Use of Logos / Pathos / Ethos (How does the author use of any of these in the argument?)
4) Use of logical fallacies (Are there logical fallacies that weaken the argument? Which ones?)
5) Use of evidence (Does the author use evidence to support the argument? Does this help or hinder the argument?)
Based on the 3 options (key points) you have chosen to critically analyze, create a thesis statement. This will help to focus your thoughts on the strength or weakness of the article in general. Be sure that you use 3 of the 5 characteristics above as key points to support your thesis.
APA Format: Times New Roman, 12 pt., double-spaced. Indents at the beginning of paragraphs. APA title page (including running head & page numbers). APA in-text citations for all quotes and a separate reference page.
Please note – you should NOT be using any additional sources aside from the article you selected. You must include at least three quotations in your essay.
Essay Format:
The essay will be composed of five paragraphs –
1. First paragraph – Introduction/Summary with thesis statement:
The goal of this paragraph is to provide the essay’s reader with a summary – the need-to-know information from the article, without response or evaluation, in the order in which it appears in the original article. The summary paragraph provides context for the paragraphs that follow. Remember to be concise and only focus on the main points from the article. The first sentence should include the author’s name, the title of the article, and the main point of the article.
End your summary with your own thesis statement: It can be as simple as “The article is problematic / effective because of ________________, __________________ & _______________” (Your key points should be focused on the 3 options you have chosen from the 5 options listed)
2. Body Paragraphs: You have 3 supporting paragraphs. Use 1 “quote” from the article per body paragraph. Include clear topic sentences containing the controlling idea for each body paragraph.
Remember the controlling idea of each body paragraph should be one of the 5 below characteristics:
1) Tone (Is the piece formal or informal)
2) Audience & Purpose (Who is this written for? What is the writer’s purpose?)
3) Use of Logos / Pathos / Ethos
4) Use of logical fallacies
5) Use of evidence
3. Conclusion: A brief summary of your essay & further call to action.
Summarize the points you covered, but also make a recommendation / call to action. Consider any of the following questions:
● What could the author have done differently to be more effective?
● What is another strategy that would further support the author’s ideas?
