Overview of Disability
A. Describe a disability, including its onset (e.g. congenital, acquired, traumatic injury), symptoms, and typical management. (10 pts.)
B. Discuss functional implications – Address the ways in which the disability may impact an individual’s ability to perform activities of daily living and participate in school, work, and community life. (10 pts.)
Part II: Perceptions, Attitudes, and Stereotypes
A. Identify and discus misperceptions, stereotypes, or myths related to the disability or the symptoms of the disability. (15 pts.)
B. Identify and describe, in detail, at least two (2) attitudinal barriers that an individual with the disability may experience. (10 pts.)
Part III: Integration and Community Participation
A. Provide accurate and detailed information to dispel the misperceptions/stereotypes/myths identified in Part II. (10 pts.)
B. Now, get creative and smash some stereotypes! Identify at least two (2) specific ways to break down attitudinal barriers and promote independence, integration, and community participation of an individual with the disability. (15 pts.)
C. Identify two (2) local/national organizations/agencies that are a source of service and support for individuals with the disability. (5 pts.) Select only organizations/agencies that have a philosophy that is in alignment with the social model of disability.
