Disciplinary Snapshot: History

Task
Please respond to the following questions in a brief (2-4 page, double-spaced) essay or in answer form, in enough detail that you will need to cite page numbers and identify authors and titles. Please include a works cited list in MLA format. Consider your audience as an interested member of the Jefferson community who has not taken this class.
A. Assigned readings: Choose two of the assigned course readings that discuss history, and answer:
a. How do these assigned course readings define history, either directly or indirectly?
b. Why do the authors of the two course readings you’ve chosen use history in their
analysis—what do they gain from using this discipline?
B. Outside reading: Find an example of a scholarly article that has not been assigned as course
reading and that uses history to analyze an issue of health/illness.
a. How does this article define the term history?
b. Why does/do the author/s use history in this analysis/article—what do they gain from
using history in this case?
C. Then, thinking about the three examples you’ve analyzed:
a. What questions does the use of history as a disciplinary lens let us ask?
b. What wouldn’t be asked or covered in the use of history?
D. What other observations or questions about history in terms of cultures of health/illness do
you have, given this analysis? (optional)
Grading
This snapshot is worth 50 points. I will grade using the following criteria:
• Is the analysis about the assigned readings thorough and relevant?
• Is the analysis about the outside reading thorough and relevant?
• Is the analysis developed fully enough to communicate your ideas to the specified audience?
• Are the required resources present, relevant and accurately cited with a works cited list in
MLA format?
