Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management in the Workplace
Final Group Project Instructions
Facebook Conflict Resolution Plan about Addressing Alleged Bullying of International Workers
1) Action-Learning Project: This is a team project. You will analyze FACEBOOK conflict problem for your action learning project. In sum, your team will serve as conflict management consultants, assessing a workplace conflict situation for a prospective client (Facebook)and designing an appropriate conflict management response for the client (Facebook) to implement. Your team will analyze the workplace conflict problem using the tools and methodology discussed in class and in readings, research solutions and prepare a written consultant’s report and in-class presentation with recommendations. You will present your recommendations to the client’s Board (Professor and classmates) in an operational review format during the last class session. Each team will be expected to use inclusion as their operating model to deliver their project, meaning each team member is responsible for undertaking substantial portions of both written and verbal delivery of the project. You will be evaluated on the operation of your team and the quality of both your verbal delivery and your analysis and recommendations.
For the final group project and presentation, you will be part of a dispute resolution and conflict management consultant firm that is looking to offer its expertise and services to organizations that are experiencing significant and highly public conflicts. You are free to create your own company name, logo, mission statement, etc.
Your firm has been contacted by the Board of Directors or owners of the organizations that are looking for expert conflict management assistance (the rest of the class will serve as the Board when your group presents, with me as the Chairperson). Each firm will provide a full assessment of the existing conflict, present strategies and options that the organization might employ to respond to it and make final recommendations as to the strategies or actions that should be implemented.
Your integrity and reputation is important to you, so your presentation will be honest and candid in what needs to be done, but you also want to persuade the organization that you are the best firm to help them with their situation.
Each team will also submit a written paper (consultant report) containing their conflict assessment and recommendations as part of the project by the day before the presentations.

In terms of the content of the presentation and paper, you can use the conflict assessment tool that was previously provided as your guide. Specifically, the organization’s leadership will want to know things like the following:
Some background about the organization/individual for whom (FACEBOOK) you are consulting.
Who are the stakeholders? Who is directly and indirectly involved or impacted? What are the relationships involved?
What is the conflict about? Specifically, what are the issues (the points of friction – the things, behaviors, relationships that people are fighting about) that will need to be addressed and resolved? What positions are the various parties taking on the conflict if you know?
What are the interests that have to be recognized – the fundamental underlying need or human motivators – for all the stakeholders and involved parties? What may be driving each party or stakeholder’s to take certain positions on the issues that they are fighting about? Are the interests common ones or conflicting interests?
What are the costs or risks if the conflict is not handled properly? What is the destructive potential?
What are the creative opportunities if the conflict is managed well? What are the possible upsides?
What are the potential challenges and barriers to addressing the conflict in a successful way?
How is the conflict currently being managed, if at all?
What expectations might the organization have to let go of or at least shift to help move forward?
What are the strategies, options or management approaches available to the organization? List a broad range even if they are ones that the organization is not likely to use and assess the advantages and disadvantages of each approach in terms of making sure that the parties’ interests are protected or recognized and the conflict is resolved in a durable and lasting way.
Which of the strategies, options or approaches that your firm identified does the firm recommend as the best one(s) to manage this conflict so it resolved in a lasting way? What steps does your firm recommend should be taken to implement the recommended strategies and in what order?
What if any follow up, monitoring or evaluation will be required?
The organization’s leadership will be looking to see how expert you really are and how well you really know this field, in terms of how thoroughly you have analyzed the conflict, the range of options you have presented to them and how persuasive your reasons are for selecting the recommended strategies for them to implement.
