About the Assignment
Your journal assignment will be a running list of entries in Microsoft Word (or an equivalent word processor) file, which you will turn in at the end of the semester. If you have concerns about whether you are doing the assignment correctly, I am willing to look at drafts.
Each entry should include a copy of a passage you find significant (typically a few sentences or 5-10 lines of poetry). If the passage is longer, you can shorten it by replacing the middle portion with an ellipsis (…). The passage should be followed by your discussion (approximately a paragraph long) or why you think the passage is significant, how you think it illuminates the meaning of the entire text, or what it reveals about the text’s place in literary and cultural history. One or two sentences is probably not enough for this, but you are not writing a whole essay.
You should make at least 1-3 journal entries for every reading. For longer readings, you will probably want to make more so that you have coverage for the entire text. Keep in mind that part of the purpose of the assignment is to assemble material that you can use as a study guide. So the goal is to highlight significant passages that you think are meaningful for building an understanding of the text. For the finished version, you will nominate the two entries you find most significant for each text.
Format
Please follow these instructions carefully. They will ensure that your assignment is completely readable. Your entry should have three components: (1) a title and reference, (2) a copy of the passage, and (3) your interpretive paragraph. The title and reference should be separated from the passage by a blank line. The interpretive paragraph should be separated from the passage by two blank lines, and each entry should also be separated by two blank lines. The title and reference should be in bold. References should indicate the title of the text and the line number (for poetry), page number (for prose), or act and scene numbers for plays. The entire entry should be formatted according to MLA (Links to an external site.) or Chicago (Links to an external site.) guidelines. A typical entry should look like this:
The Wanderer, ll. 1-5
Always the one alone longs for mercy,/the Maker’s mildness, though, troubled in mind/…and walk in exile’s paths. Wyrd is fully fixed!
This passage introduces the Germanic notion of wyrd as an observation about what has happened even as it evokes the mercy of God as an escape from the nature of time on earth.
Your actual interpretive paragraph will be longer than this. The example above is just to demonstrate the format.
Edit your entries for correct spelling, grammar, and typographical errors like your life depends on it. It’s an important part of your grade.
