Spring 2020 – ENGL 21003 – Research Paper Assignment
Your final assignment for this class will expand on the work from your previous drafts in order to create a long form argumentative paper that could:
– Advocate for a particular perspective or position in your field,
– Present a case for a certain line of research,
– Argue for a particular plan of action or treatment, or
– Seek to rebuke a particular perspective or position in your field.
Those approaches might sound distinct, but they all involve similar levels of research and synthesis, argument formation and support, audience consideration, and conceptual development. If you consider this assignment in the context of Greene’s textbook, the best model papers for you to work off would probably be position papers (which articulate a stance on a given topic, tying in to options 1, 3, and 4), and grant proposals (which advocate for a particular line of research – like option 2 invites you to do). There’s quite a bit of diversity within these models: a position paper that argues for a particular solution to a problem will probably be built on more concrete evidence than a position paper that attempts to call out a particular thesis on an issue, which might rely on more conceptual source material. But the core concerns of all the approaches you could take to this assignment are shared: you want to research a topic, develop a stance, pick an audience, and present an argument based on that stance to said audience.
All of the models will have some shared requirements as well. First, each paper will require a formal proposal, including an annotated bibliography (detailed on the next page). Each paper will require a complete Works Cited page, utilizing a consistent system of citation drawn from either a particular journal or governing organization germane to your field of study. You’ll declare that system of citation in your proposal. Your paper will also have to be between 1800 and 2700 words in length, before your Works Cited page is factored in. That means your last paper in our class will be between 6 and 9 pages, making it slightly longer than your previous assignments.
There are three key due-dates associated with this paper. The first will be 4/20/20, the due date of your research proposal. The second will be 5/4/20, the due date of your first draft of this paper. And, last but not least, the deadline for this paper, which will be 5/20/20. This due date will also be the due date for your final portfolio (which we’ll discuss after spring break).
The final draft of your research paper should contain a clear central argument, develop that argument utilizing appropriate sources and citations, and represent a critical perspective on the issue in question. It should be included in your final portfolio (but you can also send it to me as an email attachment, if you have issues with formatting while transferring it to your portfolio). Your research paper may contain any number of sources from your previous assignments, but will require a minimum of two new sources. There will be no minimum source requirement for this assignment, but I’d recommend you utilize at least one source per page to ensure that your argument is sufficiently supported.
