Emerging Changes in Culture

This essay will be about emerging changes in culture(s) of Europe between 1000 and 1400 CE.

Write a thoughtful essay related to one or more of the following topics: scientific thought, political changes, mores and norms, secular literature, art(s), music and/or dance, freedom of expression, gender role constructs, popular culture(s), and/or non-religious institutions. You must consider Roman Catholic Christianity of the High Middle Ages, or elements related to it, in your essay. Your essay
should also include the following elements:
1. Geographical comparison concerning either: (a) the Catholic See in the city of Rome vís a vís other areas of Europe, or (b) Italian cities vís a vís China and the Silk Road. In your discussion, compare and contrast your two geographical places in relation to your selected topic(s). Consider either the Catholic City of Rome and Europe, or the Italian cities and China.
2. If you choose thought and philosophy, be sure to include imagery of Rome or some dimension of Rome.
3. If you choose gender and cover only Europe, be sure to include Marie de France in your essay.
4. If you include literature written by men, regardless of geographies, be sure to include Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch) in your essay.
5. If you choose music, be sure to include Francesco Landini in your essay.
6. If you choose scientific thought or technology, and cover only Europe, be sure to include
Al-Andalus and Roger Bacon in your essay.
7. If you choose political philosophy or political changes, and cover only Europe, be sure to
include the Magna Carta in your essay.
