Essay #2 – Extreme Parenting

Write a 2-3 page evaluation essay (works cited page is in addition) of a parenting model or style discussed in the readings from this unit:
• “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”
• “Raising Risk-Takers: The Upside of Free Range Parenting”
• “I Am a Helicopter Parent–and I Don’t Apologize”
• “Study on Effect of Cell Phones on Kids Revealing Stunning Results”
You may develop your evaluation essay by using the basic features of an evaluation or as a compare/contrast essay. Remember, you’re essentially judging the parenting model or style, so your thesis statement, which is typically the last sentence of your introduction, should clearly state your judgment. (Note–your thesis must be more than “parenting style A is different from parenting style B” or “I prefer parenting style A to parenting style B.”). So, you’re giving the parenting style either a “thumbs up” or a “thumbs down” (just like we did when your group wrote the movie review).
The rest of your evaluation will support your judgment. Be sure to quote from the module readings to help you describe the parenting model and its features. You want your audience to fully understand what it is you’re evaluating.
Your evaluation essay will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
• How clear and focused the thesis statement is
• How well quotes from the reading are integrated into the essay
• How well the evaluation is supported with reasonable assertions and evidence (in-text citations from the module readings)
• How well the essay uses clear, coherent, and correct sentences
• How well the essay conforms to MLA documentation

The essay portion of your assignment should be formatted as follows:
• MLA formatting
• Use third person perspective

Your essay should include:
• Works Cited Page—with two sources listed (the module readings). You may also use information from scholarly sources from the library database, credible websites, etc.

Submittal: Submit a hard copy to instructor, and upload you essay to the Turn It In link in Module #2. You must submit the electronic copy AND the paper copy by the due date to receive credit. **Note: Although late submissions will be accepted, you won’t have the opportunity to revise if you submit a late assignment.
