Ethics Assignment

Begin the essay with a direct quotation from the philosopher covered in the chapter. (Provide the page number in parentheses after the quotation.) The quotation is NOT part of the word total. The quotation must present an important idea from the philosopher that helps answer the question. The opening quotation should function as an epigraph, so do not try to explain it immediately. Be sure that the quotation is from the philosopher and not from the editors’ running commentary/explanation of the philosopher. Do not use other direct quotations in your explanation/essay. Please do provide proper citations when paraphrasing ideas from the readings. Look over the writing rubrics to see the goals you need to meet in each essay. Read the whole chapter on Kant as well as required three web-links: one summary and two videos (see Content).Focus your essay around “Discussion Question” #7 and “Study Question” #8. As always, please be sure to follow the directions for the essay on the Course Outline. #7- Whys is freedom a presupposition of mortality(a’postulate of practical reason’)? Does the development of good habits and ‘character’- as in Aristotle- mean that we are not acting freely? Does ‘freedom’ in kant mean that are we free to choose anything? What restrictions does he place on this freedom?
#8- Why should we help people according to Kant? What should motivate use, if our actions are morally worthy? What is the place of sympathy?
