Expository (Synthesis) Essay

Write a five-paragraph expository essay, no more than four pages long (= Approximately 750 words when using Times New Roman, Source 12 with double space)

The Gory Details
You will write an introductory paragraph, a paragraph that relates Thing’s Fall Apart to the thesis, a paragraph that relating to Heart of Darkness to the thesis and a paragraph that relates “Shooting an Elephant” to the thesis. Finally, you will need a final paragraph. DO NOT compare or contrast the two works in the paragraphs of your body.

THESIS: A tendency in the written literature on the colonial experience is that it presents the colonizer or the colonized as another “exotic”, that is, something that is not entirely human.

Remember that this writing may not sound like an opinion piece.

The expository essay has to flow as literary analysis, based on well-explained evidence. Remember also that the thesis provided above is not enough. You need to put your own spin on the thesis statement WITHOUT ALTERING THE MAIN FOCUS ON THE IDEA OF THE POST-COLONIAL and, of course, you must add a 3-point line of approach.

Use the MLA style for your bibliography and your use of quotations. By the way, keep quotes short. Remember that paraphrasing is usually as effective as using a direct quotation.
