Point Value: 30 points
Grading Criteria: Clarity and coherence, along with good spelling and grammar; a minimum of three direct references (cited) to the text or materials; application of concepts from textbook into the group’s communication
Length: Three to four typed pages, double-spaced
Requirements: Choose one of these two options to explore for this paper:
You may analyze your past/present experience with communication within a group that you were/are part of. (You may want to use aliases to protect privacy.)
You may use an outside example, such as a film that deals with groups in some way, to demonstrate your understanding of the material.
After you decide on the option that you’re going to analyze, look back through the chapters as well as considering your experience (or film), and see what themes that are prevalent in the chapters are being played out. Next, you’ll work to demonstrate how these concepts are played out, and then reflect on how communication was or could have been more effective within your group. A successful project will successfully integrate several key concepts into the project and demonstrate with clarity how they’re demonstrated in the examples that you choose to analyze.
In the paper, you will need to apply concepts and terms from the text and course material, and critique the group process. Some examples:
How did your group demonstrate or meet the stages of the the group process?
How could you have improved those stages so that they could they have enhanced your overall group experience?
What other connections from the text, help you to understand your group process and it’s effectiveness better?
How did the group experience help or not help your understanding of the group process and interactions in future groups?
In order to be successful with this paper, you need to present the information without attributing others’ behaviors to outside aspects. For example, you may say that Jane was always late for your meetings, but I don’t want to hear that it was because she was always with her boyfriend. Therefore, a way to reframe this is to say that, “Jane was constantly late to our meetings, which prevented our group from completing the day’s goals on time. Our final presentation could have been improved had we utilized the time better and been more assertive in dealing with Jane.” This is a tough concept, and if you have questions about this, please contact me.
A minimum of three direct references (cited) to the text or materials to help illustrate your understanding of the material are required.
Clarity and coherence are very important aspects of this paper, along with good grammar and spelling. I’m looking for a well-thought-out and well-written paper that addresses the ways in which understanding aspects of the text can help to improve or enhance your understanding of communication in groups.
Important – Citing our Text: Because the author wishes to remain anonymous, I’ll just ask that you cite the text as CRW as being the author/text. So, you could cite it like, (CRW, 2013, p. 4). You can use the title (abbreviated for the author, in the case of citing the text for this paper and course. Here are a couple examples:
According to our text, “Speech is defined as…” (CRW, p.4).
Self disclosure, CRW (2013) states, “is defined as the disclosing of personal information.” (p.4).
Perception is defined as, “The yada yada, in regards to yada yada”(CRW, 2013, p.4).
