Rubric for Presentation

-Select a social issue that you are interested in. Social issues are sometimes also referred to as “social problems.” A social issue is one that affects social groups (large numbers of people) both as whole and individually. Social issues are often controversial and have at least two sides, if not multiple sides, to them.

-Some social issues include, but are not limited to the following:

-Capital Punishment -Bullying
-Censorship -Gun Control
-Child Labor -Obesity
-Ageism -Animal Rights
-Sexism -Euthanasia
-Poverty -Racial Profiling
-Unemployment -Illegal Immigration
-AIDS/HIV -Same Sex Marriage/Adoption
-Smoking Bans -Legalization of Marijuana

-Upon selecting a social issue, research everything about it!

-Introduce the social issue to the audience

What is the background/history of the social issue you have selected?
Why/how did it become a social issue?

-Research each side of the social issue using the sociological imagination.

Present the main claims made by the opposing sides of the social issue (even those you do not agree with)

-Provide evidence (Academic Sources) to support the side/position you agree with.

Build your case!

-Explain why you do not agree with the other side(s) claims

Do not just say “because their wrong…” Provide evidence that not only explains but supports/shows WHY that side is wrong.

-Conclusion/Reflection: What conclusions has your research on this social issue led you to? What did you learn that you did you did not already know about it? Has your research made you question or change your position on this issue? How do you personally feel about the social issue?

*Presentation MUST include in-text citations on corresponding slides and a reference slide. References may follow APA or MLA citation style guidelines.

*May use PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Docs to create the presentation

*Students are required to incorporate media clips, pictures, graphs, charts into presentation as well!

-Must include a visual aids of some sort!
-12 slide minimum
-Presentation should 8-10 minutes minimum – as this is an online presentation, students may have to include more supplements than usual to increase the time it takes to view one’s presentation.

-Students will upload/post their presentation to the Presentation Discussion Forum in the same folder as the Final Paper and A.B. dropboxes are located under the Assignments tab.

-Students will be asked to review and respond to 2 of their peers’ presentations.
