Was the Progressive Era a transformative period in the history of American politics? Is Sidney Milkis right that “Progressives set in motion the central political events of the twentieth century…that continue to shape contemporary developments in American politics”?[1] Explain your answer.

Sidney Milkis suggests that perhaps “the failure of the 1912 experiment and the [Progressive] party’s subsequent decline underscore the incoherence of the Progressive movement.”[2] Did it? Why did Roosevelt lose the election of 1912? What does the loss tell us about the Progressives and the Progressive Era more generally?
