The English 101 Research Paper

The research paper represents a culmination of all that you have learned during the course of the semester. You must rely on your abilities to analyze literature and use outside sources, as well as the literature itself, to substantiate your theories and analyses.

A research paper on literature is a paper where you use the literature and OUTSIDE sources, i.e. commentary, overviews, and analyses from reliable sources to further explain and substantiate YOUR analysis. Note: Quotes from the literature in an outside source do NOT count as using an outside source! You must use ANALYSES from outside sources!

Before beginning this assignment, go to the following link to visit the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University. There you will learn what a research paper is, what it contains, and how it is written. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT A RESEARCH PAPER IS! Many research papers in this class receive grades of zero simply because the student did not understand what a research paper was.

Be sure to turn your essay in on time! As usual, you are not permitted any personal pronouns or contractions in this essay. This is where your adherence to my strict policies regarding omitting “you,” contractions, and writing in past tense will pay off. This paper is graded VERY strictly, so pay close attention to EVERY aspect, MLA AND content, of the paper. Remember you absolutely cannot pass this class without a successful research paper!

Here are the basics regarding the research paper:

Length: Five pages (not including Works Cited) and MLA papers do not require a title page.
Font: Times New Roman 12
Sources: At least four CREDIBLE sources, one of which is the literature itself.
Format: MLA
Other: Remember, literature essays are written in present tense, and no first or second-person pronouns are permitted in the research paper.
