Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
Imagine: The private journals of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, and Paul Cezanne have been discovered. It turns out that at one time, a collector had held onto all of them, but has now decided to let them become public!
You might recall that these Post-Impressionists followed the Impressionist movement, just when Impressionism had become more widely accepted. However, even though these Post-Impressionists were indebted to these Impressionist artists, something about the objectives and interests of them did not quite wholly satisfy their aesthetic and intellectual pursuits, and so they each moved in new, but related directions.
Inside these discovered journals lay the thoughts and opinions of these Post-Impressionists.
Assignment: What would each of these artists have privately said about their own art and how it differed or broke from the Impressionist movement? Create a journal entry for each of these artists as they express their thoughts. For each entry, reference and describe at least one work by the artist and one Impressionist work in comparison and contrast, as you describe. Choose works that will best exemplify the work of these artists.
