In my research, I am interested in classroom morality, and behavioural trouble in ‘tough’ secondary classrooms.
This is a social justice and equity problem because new policy demanded that non-academic 16-17 year olds had to stay at school if they couldn’t find work, but didn’t offer them a useful curriculum, or better access to jobs.
I work with theory from Durkheim (on moral education), Bernstein (particularly, the concepts of regulative discourse and framing), and theory of neoliberalism (about blaming the loser)
… because it helps me understand how an important function of schools is to create and shape the moral citizen. In contemporary neoliberal times, such morality is becoming very harsh and punitive in the way it treats non-academic students, blaming them for their lack of life opportunities.
