Week One: Assignment 1 – Select Thesis Topic – Submission of Research Proposal
Students will communicate ideas relating to desired thesis topics during the first chat session. Before the end of the first week of class, students will select and submit a topic for approval. Topics will be returned to the students by the end of the first week either approved or approved pending revisions.
THESIS TOPICS
A Thesis is unlike any other paper written over the course of a Master’s program. In writing a thesis, the student is adding to the body of knowledge in the field. As such, a student’s thesis topic should be honed to a particular research proposition that contributes to the profession in the form of evaluating one of the following areas:
1. a topic that has been heavily researched over the years but still poses timely and topical debate (e.g., The Efficacy of Unions in the 21st Century Workplace).
2. a topic that is continually changing, such as legal issues in HR; or
3. a topic that is fairly new, such as E-recruiting or motivating millennials or Gen Z
During the course of the MAHRM Program, a student may have resonated with one or more areas of HR: Recruitment, Selection, Training, Development, Compensation, Benefits, Legal Aspects, Labor Unions, Organizational Development, or others. Following are a sampling of thesis topics:

The Faculty Advisor will comment on the soundness of the research proposal and assist the student in selecting an appropriate thesis topic form an academic and professional point of view.
This assignment is worth 20 points including 4 points as described next below.

Among items to be considered in grading:

Does the requested topic appear worthy of the assignment?
Has the student identified one or more of the issues to be investigated, including the formulation of an initial thesis statement?
Is the submission at least 1 page long, making use of APA 7th edition level 1 heading appropriate for the scope of the assignment?
Is there a cover page?
Is there a reference page, properly formatted with at least 3 peer-reviewed reference (each no older than within the past 5 years) indicating the student is beginning to formulate a research plan and identify relevant resources?
Has the student used correct English grammar, usage, style, syntax, spelling, and correct APA 7th edition formatting appropriate for the professional paper (see sample in APA Publication Guide or at OWL Purdue)?
Week Two: Assignment 2 Conduct Research + Identify & Submit Survey & Reference List
Students will utilize the resources of the NU library to begin research of peer-review journal articles related to their thesis proposal. The Professor will guide students in best practices for organizing their research files.
Students will submit an Annotated Bibliography for at least five of the 10+ references listed.
This assignment is worth 30 points.
Among items to be considered in grading:
• Did the student indicate having met with the NU Library staff sometime during the first 2 weeks of the course?
• Is a cover sheet provided?
• Are there two to four (2 to 4) pages of student narrative relating what is being submitted, including a thesis statement (repeated or restated from week 1), and discussion of the purpose and formatted to include using APA 7th edition Level 1 heading?
• Are there at least ten (10) references on the References page?
• Do the references consist of peer-reviewed articles all of which were published within the past five years?
• Are there at least 5 appendices (Appendix A, Appendix, B, Appendix C, Appendix D, Appendix E) following the References page(s)? Each appendix is the annotated bibliography for one of the 10+ references on the Reference page (At least five of the references must appear in the appendices. More than five is not expected and is therefore only optional.)

Week Three: Assignment 3 Submission of Chapter 1 Introduction First Draft
During the third week of class, students will submit Chapter 1 Introduction.
Chapter 1 Introduction consists of several sub-sections, as follows:
Introduction
Problem Statement
Purpose of the Study
Limitations of the Study
Definition of Terms
Chapter 1 should be approximately 7-10 pages in length and will likely include more than the ten references submitted as part of the Week 2 assignment.
REMINDER: For this assignment, the title “Chapter 1 Introduction: (without quotes in your draft) is treated as a Level 1 heading, to be centered at the top of page 2, one inch below the edge of the page. This is a repeat of the cover title from the cover page.
Do not repeat the word “Introduction” from the list above as an additional heading. However, “Problem Statement” and “Purpose of the Study” and “Limitations of the Study” and “Definition of Terms” (all without quotes in your draft) should appear formatted as APA 7th edition Level 2 headings.

RESEARCH SURVEY
As HR professionals, it is imperative to continually review and evaluate best practices in the field of human resource management while offering analysis and recommendations for improvement. Professional research studies and surveys conducted by national organizations in the HR profession are a reliable source of current and new practices in the field. Students in the MAHRM Program will not be conducting human subject research; rather, students will utilize valid, timely surveys from premier HR organizations, such as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). In HRM 669, the student will identify a recently conducted survey related to their thesis topic and introduce the topic, the chosen survey, and pertinent recent literature on the topic. Subsequently, in HRM 670, significant sections of the survey will be cited and
discussed in the Methodology chapter of the Thesis (Chapter 2). The student will then analyze the results of the survey in Chapter 3 and provide recommendations in Chapter 4.
