Integrative Essay (Reflection Synthesis Written Assignment)

For this written assignment, synthesize major concepts from cross-cultural research and theory in an integrative essay. This paper must be your original work that demonstrates reflective processing and thoughtful application of course material. This paper counts 20% of the final course grade. The professor will be the final arbitrator in the grade assigned.

This interpretative essay must be well organized and presented in narrative format. Responses should be substantive and reflect college level work/writing. Points will be deducted for failure to conform to appropriate rules of grammatical guidelines (spelling, correct use of upper/lower case, punctuation) and organization (concise introductions and conclusions with logical flow of information). No other outside sources other than our textbook readings are required. Provide APA-style referencing of our textbook. (Since this is an essay assignment, do not submit an Abstract.) Double-space with one-inch margins and 12-pt. font. Title your composition as “Integrative Essay” and proceed to answer the three questions in order, as “Essay 1: ETICS AND EMICS” as your first essay heading. Do not re-type my questions.

Respond to each of the following questions in order, as ESSAY 1, 2 and 3. Each response should be presented in approximately 1 ½ pages, not to exceed 5 pages. (This is in addition to your Title Page.)

ESSAY 1: ETICS AND EMICS Worldviews across the globe come in many forms! Cross-cultural research examines both universal and culture-specific psychological processes. Explain both ‘etic’ and ‘emic’ perspectives and discuss an example of each.

ESSAY 2: CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION Though the ability to acquire language is considered to be universal, may differences in the processes of communication occur across cultures. Define and discuss the role of gestures, paralanguage and proxemics in the transactional process of communication. How would you address potential stumbling blocks that could impede the transactional process of communication?

ESSAY 3: PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS AND CULTURAL COMPETENCE Societal norms often influence the perceptions of what constitutes normal and abnormal behavior. Consider the definitions of abnormal behavior that are outlined by the authors of our text. How would the cultural context of a child recently diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) influence your description/recommendations to the parents, in an effort to provide culturally competent intervention?
