Intelligence Failure Research Paper

The student will select a national security case involving strategic surprise from modern history (since WWII) and determine the causes of the surprise and if the causes can be considered a failure of intelligence. Do not choose Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway, East Africa Bombing, or 9/11, since these are studied and analyzed in the course. Dahl provides possible cases to choose from in Chapter 4 of the text or you may choose one of your own. To effectively evaluate and determine the causes of the surprise and if the causes can be considered a failure of intelligence, the student will use criteria from one or more sources studied in this course, e.g. Dahl, Grabo, Miller, Marin, etc. The paper will be written in current Turabian format and consist of a title page, abstract, body, and references page. The body will be at least 8 pages in length and must be no longer than 12 pages. There must be at least 5 scholarly sources cited in the paper. The paper will be graded using a provided rubric.
