Jesus and Salvation in Mark

Background Information
Most of the workshops in this course will focus on two books of the New Testament. We will learn about the background, structure, purpose, and theological themes of each of these books. These are the four aspects mentioned in the course and workshop outcomes. This workshop will focus on the Gospels of Mark.

While the Gospels all share some information and stories, each Gospel has a distinctive message about the person and mission of Jesus. The reading and lectures will give you information regarding the background, structure, purpose, and theological themes of Mark. Mark is the shortest of the Gospels and one of the easiest to read, but it also presents us with a very challenging portrayal of Jesus’ way of salvation. This assignment will have you digest both readings and a lecture on the Gospel of Mark and then have you discuss how Jesus is portrayed as the agent of God’s salvation in Mark’s Gospel.

Instructions

1. Read Chapters 14 and 18 in Jesus is Lord.
2. Read the entire Gospel of Mark in a standard translation of the Bible.
3. Watch the video lecture “Jesus and Salvation in the Gospel of Mark.”

4. Select two passages from the Gospel of Mark and one quotation from either the reading in Jesus is Lord or the lecture that work together to describe how Mark portrays Jesus as God’s agent of salvation in the gospel.
