Journalism News Writing and Reporting
Part 1: Your radio-style profile. Just write me the script—no audio needed. Remember there are two leads—an anchor lead that sets you, the reporter, up (just like we did in class), and a story lead. So for the story lead, we already know the gist of your focus, since we’ve “heard” the anchor lead. Use full sentences to set up your soundbites, which should be a sentence or two long. For the profile, you want to find one person whose work or self is compelling. Interview her/him about what makes her/him passionate about what they do/are. Get a soundbite or two from a colleague and partner/family reflecting on what makes that person compelling. Email your story to me (either email) by 2pm Th.
We’ll have another news discussion, and you can certainly suggest your own threads!
We’ll do some exercises to be posted online. (150 words)
Part 2: There’s going to be a lot of economic fallout in the wake of the quarantine, and there’s been a lot of lamenting in news circles about the impact on local news, mostly newspapers. Many newspapers were hanging on by a thread, anyway. Does it matter if local papers go away? What if we all get our news on social media (hello, Twitter!) or from the big boys like the WSJ, the NYT and the WPost? (150 words)
Part 3: Textbook exercises (pdf textbook will be attached)
Please do the broadcast exercises 1, 2, 3, and 4 on page 225 (page might be different on attached version so check that its the broadcast exercise. Please do exercise 4 on page 74, you’ll have to work off the web.
