Pick one of the following topics:

Write a division essay of a SPECIFIC literary or musical genre. Divide the subject by its component parts.
Write a classification essay of a specific industry, such as medical science or information technology.
Keep in mind that classification takes a group of things and sorts them by qualities to better understand their similarities and differences, and division takes a single thing and divides it into parts to better understand the whole. To use either method, you will also need to employ comparison and contrast, description, definition, and example writing strategies.

Regardless of which topic you select, remember the following:

Classification and Division essays identify, define, and explain the component parts of an entity.
Create a thesis that names (identifies) the subject being classified or divided. Express the purpose for such a classification or division.
Support thesis with multiple expanded and concrete examples.
Develop a minimum of four controlling body paragraph ideas, with each addressing a component.
Do NOT use first person (I/we) or second person (you/yours). Write from the third person point of view. Personal experience can be presented from a third person point of view.
Utilize a minimum of two outside sources–but no more than three. Sources must be documented within the essay–parenthetical documentation–and on the Works Cited page adhering to MLA rules.
Draft, draft, and draft. Remember no essay can be completed in a single draft. Complete multiple drafts keeping in mind each of the essay parts–thesis, development and support, organization, and mechanics. Once you have completed a polished draft of the essay, consider submitting it to either Smarthinking or one of CSN’s Writing Centers to receive revision feedback. Both of these services are free to CSN students. To receive Smarthinking at no expense, you must access it from the CANVAS site. Students who CONSISTENTLY seek assistance from either of these tutorial services, score higher marks than those students who do not.
Meet the word minimum of 700 words. Your essay may exceed it by an additional 250 words.
