Machiavelli’s “The Prince”
Writing Assignment
The Prince
Answer one of the following questions:
1. Does Machiavelli provide good advice for political leaders in The Prince? Imagine how a modern political figure would use his advice to establish control over a state today.
2. Does Machiavelli provide good advice for ordinary people? How could you use his advice in your own life? If the answer is no, in what ways could his advice be harmful for individuals?
In your answer be sure to use the primary source text, The Prince. The student is expected to use direct quotes from the book to support an argument. These may be cited by page or chapter number. Standard citations (Chicago or MLA) must be used for other sources, if the student chooses to include evidence from other sources. It is not expected that the student will have to use texts not assigned on the syllabus. Every day the paper is late the grade will be dropped by four points. The paper should be typed, three to four pages in length, double-spaced, with one inch margins and 12 pt. font size, preferably Times New Roman. The paper must be submitted as a word document on LU Learn.
