“Growing Up in a Media Culture”
“Growing Up In a Media Culture” (1000 words, 4 pages): [15%]
All assignments will be typed in 12 point font, Times New Roman/Times, 1-inch margins
all around, and double spaced. Make sure to print the final word count at the bottom of
the assignment and insert page numbers. This is your take home midterm assignment.
This assignment asks you to cite material from class and answer the basic question,
“What have I learned thus far?” A detailed handout will be distributed. This assignment
is due Thursday, November 7th.
REQUIREMENTS:
! The main question you will answer is, what is your new relationship with media
(film, tv, or social media)? How has class material been influential in developing
your new relationship?
! Include a paragraph describing your previous (before this class) relationship with
media and how (specifically with evidence from readings) has this class changed
that relationship.
! You need an introductory paragraph. The paragraph will have your thesis and
roadmap of what will be discussed in your paper.
! You must cite 4 different readings from class. So far you have read 9
articles/book chapters. You can cite readings you cited in previous assignments.
! You must cite 1 documentary we screened in class.
! No need for a bibliography. When quoting authors use their last names in
parenthesis followed by a page number (Hinojos, 32). We read two Stuart Hall
readings. Make sure you include the year to distinguish which reading you’re
referencing. For example (Hall, 1997, 8) or (Hall, 1993, 53).
! You can use up to 2 direct quotes. No more than three full lines. The other
citations from the readings will be in your own words.
! Make sure you use terminology/concepts from class. Define them.
! Make sure you have a final paragraph/conclusion that summarizes your main
points.
! Points will be taken off for grammar/style (just like the previous assignment)
BRAINSTORMING QUESTIONS:
! How did you view media before? Have you engaged with media more/less
because of this class? How were you reading media before? How have you been
socialized (raised) to view media? Was there a specific media example that you
can use to illustrate your change? Have you shared information learned from class
with other people? What was their reactions?
