Microeconomics Research Paper Information

Some suggested research paper topics.

1. Income distribution is an important and controversial microeconomic issue. What is the current state of income distribution within the United States? How has it changed over time? How is it measured? What are the possible effects on a country having an extremely poor distribution of wealth? These are just some of the questions that can be explored.

2. The problem of moral hazard has economic impacts. Discuss this using some current issue in the news. Among those could be but not limited to the mortgage crisis, insurance for flood plain areas and even Social Security.

3. Are there market solutions to the problem of externalities? Explore some of the suggested solutions recently offered to deal with pollution problems.

4. Pick one of the four major market structures, perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition, and then find an industry that you think illustrates the characteristics of that market structure. Prove your theory using evidence and other sources.

5. Pick one of the major economic theorists and discuss their major contribution to the field of microeconomics. Please avoid discussing macroeconomics. One way to find an economist is to look at recent and past recipients of the Nobel Prize in economics.

6. A relatively new field of economics is behavioral economics. Who was the founder of this discipline and what major economic assumptions did it call into question?
