Misconduct

Abuse of power and misconduct is not new to our society, especially at the individual or even systematic level. Police brutality exists in many countries and we in the U.S. is no exception. Yet with our resources, we have the power to make changes is at the state, local, and federal through effective and independent oversight (The Law Dictionary, 2017).
In studies done enlisting former officers charged with abuse or misconduct many state the reason (in their mind); vengeance and anger, selfishness and greed, underappreciation and lack of respect, tainted leadership and management, poor training, and bias or Indifference to others (Packman, 2009).
However, this goes both ways too. No respect for serving and protecting the community. When officers believe if they are too nice, people take advantage of them (CATO, 2016). The theme of “us vs them” is constant and everyone is stereotyped and group with the good and bad. These factors no matter what, is a crime against the dignity of a human person and violates the rights and responsibilities of the position.
Although much of the media shows that police brutality/abuse of power is perceived as an issue that minority groups experience, that assumption is wrong. By looking at anyone, a police officer doesn’t know if someone is a service member out of uniform, a doctor or nurse in jeans, or another officer in plainclothes. It is wrong against the community, the profession and all of society.
