Part 1: Visualize Scene
Write in present tense, as if happening now
Focus in on a particular, circumscribed moment; don’t try to cover too much territory
Note a particular tension at the level of plot or theme
Notice key details about form (visual, sound, tone, music, etc.)
Avoid a simple narration of action (this happened, then this happened, then this, etc.)
Part 2: Basic Context / Representation of Whole Film
Offer basic info — title, director, release date
Keep outside reader in mind (write to someone who has never seen the film)
Keep this summary brief — tell us only what we need to know to understand your scene and its larger meaning
This act of summary / representation is also an act of interpretation / selection, so be selective about what you choose to tell us about the film and what is better left out.
Part 3: Larger Significance
Consider how your film is different from other films about the same topic or in the same genre
Consider how your film is culturally relevant — what does it show us about the real world?
Turn to an outside context or scene or aspect of form to help deepen and substantiate your insight.
The final paper will only be around 3 pages, so you need to focus this work. Also, keep in mind that Parts 1 and 2 can go in either order – start with representation or scene — as long as you point to a tension by the end of the first paragraph. I’ve attached my Jaws’ examples for your reference.
Please focus on the feminism theme in Mad Max: Fury Road, and choose a scene accordingly.
