Part I: Identification and Textual Support Post
Instructions:
Please number and compose ONE paragraph for each of the following:
⦁ Write a 7-point Academic Meaty Sentence (⦁ AMS ) (14 points) to introduce Tompkins’ text, and then summarize it in no more than 3-5 sentences (11 points). (25 points total)
⦁ Identify and describe Tompkins’ audience and how she establishes kairos and exigence (20 points each to total 40). Remember: her intended audience is specific; in fact, they are reluctant to her position. Her intended audience is not general or even college students or people interested in history, though this does not mean that people outside her intended audience will not be persuaded.) To make sure you understand Tompkins’ kairos, you may want to review ⦁ this lecture (Links to an external site.)
⦁ Identify the appeal (pathos, ethos, or logos) you believe Tompkins uses most effectively, and briefly introduce, identify and analyze THREE specific strategies Tompkins uses to make that appeal. (60 points total, 20 each) You must quote from the text to illustrate each strategy. To strengthen your academic voice and ethos, avoid using phrases like “I believe” and “I think.” Save “I” for personal examples. Example: if you choose the appeal to emotions (pathos), you may discuss her strategic use of narrating emotional events, emotionally loaded language, and emotional examples. (Hint, if you choose ethos, the statement from the editors about her credentials IS NOT an appeal that Tompkins makes). The appeals chart you downloaded earlier may prove valuable, but here it is again (just in case you didn’t download it): ⦁ 124-Chart-Logos, Ethos, Pathos .pdf
Additional Requirements:
Employ Literary Present Tense (LPT) (Links to an external site.) and MLA in-text citations (Links to an external site.) correctly and consistently. (25 points–this is C/NC; your use of MLA and LPT is correct or it is not. Example: To appeal to her readers’ emotions, more specifically, nostalgia, Tompkins briefly narrates her misguided history with “Indians.” She asserts, “My Indians, like my princesses, were creatures totally of the imagination” (101). This is effective because…” (Always introduce a quote, give it, and then discuss it–remember the “Quote Sandwich (Links to an external site.)”? Also, note “She asserts” NOT “She asserted.”)
