Philosophical argument ( Plato Republic and Daniel Keyes)
This part of Plato’s Republic is known as the “allegory of the cave.” There are many things that it is meant to illustrate (and part of it functions as a bit of propaganda for studying philosophy), but what I’d like you to do is connect it to a quote from the book Flowers for Algernon (1959) by Daniel Keyes: “Now I understand that one of the important reasons for going to college and getting an education is to learn that the things you’ve believed in all your life aren’t true, and that nothing is what it appears to be.”
How does this quote illustrate some of the points Plato is trying to make in the reading? How does this relate to your college experience so far? Do you think this is a good or a bad thing? Why or why not?
Intructions: Making argument by answering all questions above and give examples supporting your ideas. Make sure you CONNECT all of your ideas to each other and always be sure that everything you say leads back to your thesis.
