(1) Pick a dataset in CSV format
Search the internet to find a dataset in CSV or TSV format (comma- or tab-separated values) that interests you. It should have at least several variables (columns) and at least 100 rows (observations/cases/individuals).

(2) Explore your data set
Take time to examine the data. Look at it directly. Consider it. Formulate questions. Read the data into R.
Investigate it in an exploratory way. Use R functions to augment your investigation. Answer questions about it. Find relationships within it. After a while, consolidate observations. Finalize interpretations (even if they are tentative). Articulate remaining ideas, thoughts, hunches, guesses, etc. Consider possible graphical presentations. Consider how to show the data at varying levels of interpretation. Recall standard graphical methods and/or imagine new ones. Decide which are are suitable.

(3) Form a report with three parts
(a) written qualitative part: write a 500-word description of the data. This should resemble an essay.
Communicate the general features of the dataset. Give its background. What information does it contain?
Summarize its contents in moderate detail. What can one infer from it? Write what you think is interesting
about it.
(b) written quantitative part: summarize the data again, but this time, specially in quantitative
(numerical) terms. This could be the pdf transcript of an R session. Plan a sequence of commands, such
as we’ve used during the course, to effectively summarize various aspects of the data. Then run them, and print the session in pdf format. Or, collect the results of such an analysis into a separate document. Or, do such an analysis in another way, and report on it. In summary: give a statistical exposition of the data.
(c) visual part: make two (or more) informative data graphics. Show some interesting aspects of the
dataset, in a visually clear and appealing way. These could be made by R and saved in pdf format, or made by hand.
